What is a Self-Guided Tour (SGT) ?

Japan is truly a magnificent country to tour by bike. However, navigating the road system and getting around the obvious language barrier can seem quite overwhelming for many travelers. To overcome these hurdles and to get the most out of your motorcycle tour, you may wish to select one of our GPS self-guided tours. To meet your needs we have three options available for you to choose from. Below is an explanation of each of these options. If one of these suits your needs, please ‘Add to My Trip’, by going to the booking section on the Bikes & Prices page of our website.

*Please note: One Bluetooth Helmet Intercom is included with the GPS navigation unit for all Self-Guided Tour options. This will allow you to utilize the GPS audio function. If you wish to communicate with your passenger or another rider, that person will need to rent another Bluetooth Helmet Intercom, which can be found in the 'Riding Gear' section of the Bikes and Prices page of our website.

Option A: "Open Explorer"
includes GPS navigation unit preloaded with JBR sightseeing POIs

Option 1 - Garmin Zumo

An Open Explorer SGT is for those adventurous types who want the convenience of a navigation unit, but don’t want to be told what to do or where to go. The Garmin Zumo GPS navigation unit comes preloaded with Japan maps and offers turn-by-turn English audio guidance. The unit also comes preloaded with hundreds of JBR custom sightseeing POIs (Points Of Interest), such as temples, shrines, castles, recommended beaches, lakes, rivers and volcanoes. Simply select your destination from the ‘Favorites’ menu. The unit will calculate the distance to be traveled and generate your tour route. Use the paid highways to get there fast or deactivate ‘toll roads’ if you wish to take your time. Naturally, the unit won’t lead you along the most scenic roads, but it will get you from A to B. If you wish to explore other roads along the way, feel free. The unit will automatically recalculate your route, meaning you’ll never lose your way. Take the stress of map reading out of your trip with this handy little guidance tool.

*Japan Bike Rentals uses Japanese language maps. These maps ensure better route accuracy and, unlike 3rd party English maps, display detailed iconic POI information, enabling the user to self-navigate to campsites, gas stations, hotels, etc. in the local vicinity.

**Please note that the search functions are restricted when in English mode. Using the address search function is possible if you can read Japanese or are willing to ask a local for help entering your destination address. Using a telephone number to search a destination is the best option, although not all phone numbers are listed. Results that are listed are displayed only in Japanese.

Option B: "Scenic Explorer"
includes GPS navigation unit pre-programmed with JBR scenic riding routes + hotel bookings

Option 2 - Garmin Zumo + Custom MapIf you prefer a hassle-free approach to your touring, then the Scenic Explorer SGT is your answer.

Japan Bike Rentals has spent a long time researching the country, finding the most scenic routes and most awe-inspiring points of interest (POIs). Avoid congested roads and built up areas. We’ll be taking you along roads it has taken us years to find, where the real Japan lies; off the beaten track. You’ll be riding through old villages, past beautiful rice fields, visiting exquisite temples and stopping off at a host of other maginificent places along the way. Overnight stops have been specially selected for their cultural or scenic significance, making your tour the best it can be.

Simply let us know how many days you'll be touring and we will recommend a self- guided tour that suits you best. We will take into account your travel dates, preferred daily ride time, and regional and sightseeing preferences.

In addition to specially designed riding routes, enjoy the added luxury of pre-booked accommodation. Prior to your trip, Japan Bike Rentals will ask you to select the class of accommodation that best suits your budget. We offer 5 classes of accommodation: Budget (less than 6000yen/night per person), Economy (6000 - 10,000 yen/night per person), Mid-range (10,000 - 18,000 yen/night per person), Deluxe (18,000 - 30,000 yen/night per person) and Super Deluxe (30,000 yen/night per person on up - you will be staying at Japan's finest hotels and ryokans).

By having Japan Bike Rentals plan your route and book all your accommodation ahead of time, you can sit back, enjoy the ride and rest assured that you`ll be experiencing the best of Japan. If you want to take the hassle of planning out of your trip, this option is perfect for you.

Option C: "Custom Explorer"
includes GPS navigation unit with custom designed riding routes + hotel bookings if required

Option 3 - Garmin Zumo + Custom Map + HotelIf you already have a specific riding route in mind, JBR will create a Custom Explorer SGT for you. Perhaps there are certain ryokan or onsen that you would like to visit, or maybe you have friends you would like to see along the way. Let us know the places you would like to pass through on your ride (provide us with addresses if possible). We will then design a scenic riding route that intersects with these points. We will build a one-time trip specially for you.

JBR recommends riding no more than 200km/day if using the more scenic and interesting local roads. Naturally, if using the paid expressways you will be able to cover more distance. We will consult with you regarding your proposed route and offer suggestions to make your trip as realistic and as enjoyable as possible.
