Shikoku is the smallest of the 4 main islands. This region is extremely mountainous and therefore has limited agriculture and industry. As a result, many consider this to be the most isolated and interesting of touring destinations in Japan. The Japanese consider Shikoku a holy place  - home to the 88 temple Henro Pilgrimage, which many Japanese attempt once in a lifetime to achieve enlightment. Shikoku, with its subtropical climate, is an ideal touring destination in the cooler months. The Anan coast with its deep blue ocean and strong currents in the east, and the Mediterranean-like views in the west, make this region an explorer's wonderland. However, remember that Shikoku can be hit by a number of powerful typhoons in late summer, so keep an eye on the weather if you are planning to explore this region.
