This primarily mountainous region makes up the westerly most part
of the main island of Honshu. The largest city in the region is Hiroshima, which is located on the southern coast, known as the
Seto Inland Sea. This area is well known for its relatively dry climate and is home to a number of urban centers. Another famous sight, considered to be among the three most beautiful in Japan, is Itsukushima shrine on the island of Miyajima. The shrine's famous 'floating' torii gate stands majestically in the sea, serving to guide the spirits in across the water. The northerly Sea of Japan coast is rugged and mountainous, and where you will find small farming communities, coastal fishing villages and the bizarre coastal sand dune desert of Tottori. Being so close to China and Korea, this region has a rich history and there are many ancient traditions and customs that reflect these influences. |
